Fraternal life

"Honor each other and let no one seek your own interest but that of others" 

The Benedictine monk does not live alone, but joins other brothers to seek God together, in a community, under the guidance of an abbot. 

Fraternal life has a main role as a school of charity, where people united by the same desire exchange help and consolation. 

Living together helps to progressively become aware of your own weaknesses and limitations. The monk begins to experience his misery in the mercy of God, and is gradually led down a path of humility and understanding towards his brothers.  In turn, the patience of the brothers towards him makes him touch something of the tenderness of God.
